Heather Christensen

Program Coordinator, ISSA

Heather Christensen

My role: I plan and implement many fun events for international students, scholars and spouses. Each November, during International Education week, we welcome local ethnic restaurants to the Stepan Center for the International Taste of South Bend @ND. This free event is the largest international food festival on campus, and it includes entertainment from ND student groups competing for cash prizes. I also coordinate the monthly "World on Tap" at Rohrs, and our free specialty coffee hour, the Global Cafe, held three times each semester. I assist with our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for international spouses.

Throughout the year, I take students on field trips to places like Amish Country in Shipshewana, Indiana and the Michigan City Outlet Mall, and help students get involved in the local community by volunteering at the South Bend Center for the Homeless. I am also in charge of the Family Friendship Program which matches up local families with our international students. The Family Friendship Program is not a homestay program, but rather a chance to get to know a local family or international student by spending time together and participating in activities of their choosing throughout the academic year.

Why I find my work important: An especially rewarding part of my job is leading the amazing International Ambassadors student leadership group comprised of 29 international and American, graduate and undergraduate students who assist with international student orientation each fall and with all ISSA events throughout the year. They also serve as student mentors.

Professional background: I have worked at The University of Notre Dame for over five years and spent over 20 in the corporate world.

About me: I am the proud mom of two wonderful sons, Justin and Bryan, and am a lifelong Michiana area resident.
