After the return of their king, the people illuminated the city with lanterns and burst firecrackers in celebration. For that reason, Diwali is identified as the “festival of lights.” The festival focuses on the shining of one’s inner spiritual light.

The Ontology of Platonic Forms

Already in antiquity, Plato's student Aristotle decried the theory as fanciful, unacceptably metaphorical, and irredemiably vague. Aristotle also contended that Plato was liable to a devastating objection to the ontology of Forms, namely that Forms are both universals and particulars. One core question of this conference: is Aristotle right? One corollary question: what precisely are Forms? Another: do Plato's surviving texts provide any conclusive answer? …

Classics and Irish Politics 1916-2016 (June 20 - 23)

Location: Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College Dublin

1916web_banner

This conference addresses for the first time, in an academic context, how models from Greek and Roman antiquity have permeated Irish political discourse over the last century. The 1916 Easter Rising, when Irish nationalists rose up against British imperial forces, became almost instantly mythologized in Irish political memory as a key turning point in the nation’s history which paved the way for an independent Irish Republic. Its centenary provides a natural point for reflection on Irish politics, and the aim of this conference is to highlight an under-appreciated element in Irish political discourse, namely its frequent reliance on and reference to classical Greek and Roman models.…

Global issues in intervention development in contexts of political violence

Location: Rome Global Gateway

July 15-23, 2016

Violence in Palestine has been on-going and severe for many years, and there is a wealth of basic research on the negative effects of such violence on developing children and their family systems. Yet, there have been extraordinarily few interventions that have been rigorously evaluated and even fewer that have been able to demonstrate any positive effects on mental health. We propose that two theoretical frameworks – social ecological theory and emotional security theory – may be successfully leveraged for better identifying possible avenues for successful mental health programs in setting with chronic violence (Cummings & Miller-Graff, 2015). The conference will seek to: discuss the application of these theoretical models as they apply to mental health program development in Palestine, consider conceptualizations of resilience and well-being in the face of chronic trauma, and identify relevant intersections between systems that may require unique approaches to treatment.…

Sant'Egidio in Africa Presents "The DREAM Programme in Malawi"

-

Location: Rome Global Gateway

January 18, 2016

The book is the result of a field study lasting three years (2009-2011) at the DREAM Centre in Blantyre, Malawi's second city, a place where today are treated thousands of people coming from all the areas of the town. This case study allowed me to observe a variety of elements connected with the health treatment proposed by DREAM which can produce important socio-economic outcomes. They are at the base root of an activation mechanism (Scitovsky, 2007) or a "propensity to be subjectively active in the development process"(Sen, 1999) at a micro and macro level.…
