Senior ISSA Programs and Events Coordinator
My role: I plan and implement programs and events at International Student & Scholar Affairs and lead our amazing International Ambassador student leadership team that serve as peer mentors to international students and assist with yearly events and our international student orientation.
In our effort to internationalize the campus we hold events each semester to help engage students, scholars, post docs and spouses on campus and in the local community. Our signature yearly event that I plan and implement is the International Taste of South Bend @ND, the largest international food festival on campus. Last year 14 local multi-cultural restaurants served up food samples at the Duncan Student Center to over 1,400 students, staff and community members! I also coordinate and plan our Global Café’s for all students on the ND campus. At these fun, internationally themed events that bring students together in a festive atmosphere we offer free specialty coffee and tea and food and are held three times each semester. At past Global Café’s we have partnered with the Indian Student Association, Latino Student Alliance, The Department of Irish Language and Literature and enjoyed music by Marichi ND and dancing by the ND/St. Mary’s Irish Dance Team. I also assist with our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for international spouses and the Tax Assistance Program for international students and scholars. I also do some marketing and communications, for example producing our bi-weekly ISSA UPDATES email and marketing all of ISSA’s events throughout campus and the community.
Each Fall and Spring break, I take students on field trips to places like Chinatown in Chicago, IL and the Michigan City Prime Outlet Mall. I enjoy helping students get involved in the local community, for example volunteering at the South Bend Center for the Homeless in their food pantry or sorting food for senior citizens at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. I am also in charge of the Family Friendship Program in which we match up local families with international students allowing participants to learn more about different cultures, traditions, and languages.
Why I find my work important: I love doing whatever it takes to help make a student’s experience at Notre Dame amazing and the events and programs ISSA offers I feel do just that. And, working with ND students is a joy and I always learn something new from my student interns which is a great bonus for me.
Professional background: I have worked at The University of Notre Dame for over seven years and spent over 20 in the corporate world in project management, communications and event planning.
About me: I am the proud mom of two wonderful sons and a lifelong Michiana area resident. I graduated from Vincennes University with a degree in Broadcasting and Communications.
