The Ordered Universe: Interdisciplinary Readings of Medieval Science

Location: Rome Global Gateway

April 5-8, 2016

The workshop is the first a series that takes place over four years, in which humanities scholars and scientists examine in depth scientific work of the 13th-century English master Robert Grosseteste. The workshop's leadership includes Cecilia Panti, faculty at University Tor Vergata and will contain sessions of intensive co-reading, translation, and interpretation of two treatises. Perspectives from history, philosophy, theology, paleography, textual analysis--and from the modern scientific inheritors of the science--prove essential to recover a deep understanding of the texts (which in this case will be the De spheara and the Compotus Correctorius).

The workshop is sponsored by Notre Dame's partner Durham University, as well as Durham's Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Studies.
