About Reframing 1916


On Easter Monday 1916, a small group of Irish rebels—including poets, teachers, actors and workers—took on the might of the British Empire.  Although defeated militarily, the men and women of the Easter Rising would soon win a moral victory—with their actions leading to the creation of an independent Irish state and contributing to the eventual disintegration of the British empire. They have inspired countless freedom struggles throughout the world—from Ireland to India.

In the centenary year, the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies is partnering with the Irish Government and leading universities and institutions worldwide to host a series of international academic events. Called Reframing 1916, these events will bring select Notre Dame faculty to museums, institutions, and universities with an Irish Studies presence to engage with their faculty, students, and the public in a scholarly response and reassessment of the seminal events of 1916.
