Proposal Submission Deadline: February 25, 2019
Through the generous support of University benefactors, Notre Dame International is providing funds to build, sustain, and encourage academic and research collaboration with Tel Aviv University (TAU). Separately, a gift has been made directly to TAU for their faculty and staff to further collaborations or joint workshops with Notre Dame.
Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and, where appropriate, projects can be offered administrative and logistical support through the Jerusalem Global Gateway.
Full-time regular members of the Notre Dame faculty and special professional faculty are eligible to apply. At TAU, tenured or tenure track faculty are eligible to apply.
It is required that the research/workshop proposals involve several ND and TAU researchers of varied levels (e.g., PhD students, Post Docs, as well as regular faculty). Total costs shall not exceed $15,000 (including travel) of which ND and TAU will each cover $7,500.
- Notre Dame applicants should submit their proposals via Notre Dame International's submissions manager
- TAU applicants should submit their proposals to the Office of the Vice President at Tel Aviv University
- Proposals should be submitted simultaneously at each institution and will be reviewed jointly at both institutions.
Each proposal must include two principal investigators, one from Notre Dame and one from TAU. The proposal may also include co-investigators from either institution.
Submitted proposals must be written in clear, non-technical language and include the following items:
- Proposal title
- Amount being requested
- Notre Dame Principal Investigator (scholar applying for funds from Notre Dame), department/center/institute affiliations, phone, email
- TAU Principal Investigator (scholar from TAU), department/center/institute affiliation, email
- Co-Investigator(s) (additional scholars from either institution), department/center/institute affiliations
- Abstract of the proposed project (one paragraph)
Description of the proposed project (three-page maximum, single spaced), including:
- The objective of the project
- Background, previous work and/or motivation as appropriate
- Project approach and methods
- Anticipated outcomes, including how the project will promote collaboration between Notre Dame and Tel Aviv University
- Anticipated time schedule
Budget and budget justification: supply detailed budget identifying and explaining all anticipated expenditures
- Fully justify any proposed travel
- Description of other funds secured or applied for
- Letter from department chair or dean stating that the department or college is supportive of the proposal and has approved its impact on staffing, resources, etc.
- Letter from collaborator (located at Tel Aviv University) indicating their willingness and ability to participate in the proposed collaborative initiative
- Curriculum vitae: (2-page maximum, current) for each faculty member listed on the cover sheet as a principal investigator; if postdocs, graduate students and/or undergraduates are included in the project as collaborators, describe their qualifications
Criteria for evaluating proposals
A faculty-led review committee will use the following criteria to evaluate proposals:
- Quality of the proposal, including its potential for new or sustainable collaboration between Notre Dame and Tel Aviv University, on research, and/or on the education and training of students
- Potential for academic publication
- Reach: breadth and depth of impact of the proposed project
- Joint capacity: evidence of the professional standing and track record of the academics involved. If applicable, evidence of successful past collaborations with Tel Aviv and/or with the proposed collaborators.
- Budgetary appropriateness - Please note that applications that are based principally around attending a conference are not eligible. Costs associated with travel or conference attendance will only be supported so far as such expenses can be demonstrated to be an integral part of the proposed project.
Awards will be made in the Spring. Funds are expected to be used within one year of the date of the award.
Follow-up Report and Activities
- Successful applicants are required to submit two reports on the outcome of their grant: an interim report is due midway after the project starts and a final report is due a month after the project ends. The report should include:
- A summary of the activities funded by the award and significant results achieved, including evidence that the project contributed to the collaboration between Notre Dame and Tel Aviv University
- Any publications or manuscripts resulting from the award
- Photos, if applicable, are welcome
- Successful applicants are required to make a brief oral presentation, at an event hosted by NDI, on the outcome of the research and collaboration with Tel Aviv University following the end of the grant period.
- Submit brief updates (and pictures, if applicable) of any development related to the grant funding that is newsworthy (e.g. conference, launch of new program), including any relevant feedback from collaborators in Tel Aviv
- Reference the Schlindwein Family Grant Program, as applicable, in any relevant publications
