Where is Notre Dame Pre-College jetting off to on our next international adventure? We’ll give you a few hints: Big Ben, double decker buses, Kings Cross Station, the Great British Baking Show...In Summer 2023, high school juniors will have the opportunity to travel to exciting London with Notre Dame Pre-College!

This newest study abroad location will allow students to utilize the London Global Gateway, Notre Dame’s global center in one of the most popular study abroad destinations for our undergraduate students.

Pre-College students will spend two weeks immersed in one of the world’s oldest and greatest cities, renowned for its distinct literature, acclaimed theater, iconic architecture, and thriving financial district—while earning a college credit through the course “The History of London as a Global Trading Capital.”

The city itself will be the classroom as students visit iconic landmarks (a trip to Buckingham Palace, anyone?) and also go beyond the popular holiday hot spots to explore how London came to be the city it is today.

Each day will highlight a different period in a unique area of London, from the city's Roman foundations to the 21st century, focusing on how London developed as a global city of trade and immigration over the centuries. Class discussions, tours, and excursions will be led by Notre Dame International faculty and guest lecturers.

Alice Tyrell is the director of academic programs at the London Gateway and has been working with study abroad groups for over 20 years, long enough to see the life-changing impact the London experience has had on students.

“I have seen over and over how the opportunity to live and study abroad can impact people,” says Tyrell. “Engaging with somewhere different from the place or places you've grown up in, meeting people and studying histories you may not encounter in your regular life, brings a different perspective. The experience encourages students to become more globally-minded, more aware that there are many different ways to view the world, its challenges, and its joys, how different things can be, but also how connected the world is.”

London is a renowned international hub, making it an ideal location for students to discover not only more about themselves, but to learn from those with different perspectives.

As the world becomes increasingly more interconnected, International Program Director of Pre-College Programs Curtis Urban saw the need for more opportunities for high school students to answer the call to become global citizens of the world and he knew London would provide endless opportunities to students.

“By providing students with a streamlined means for participating in global exchange, young people can lay the foundation for a worldview that moves beyond self interest, instead seeking to make a difference in their broader communities and, hopefully, the world,” says Urban. “With the mission of Notre Dame to create forward-thinking citizens seeking to make a positive impact on this planet, London provides students with an incredible arena of politics, business, and arts for students to engage with on a daily basis.”
