New academic directors and rectors appointed at Rome and London Global Gateways
Heather Hyde Minor and JoAnn DellaNeva have been appointed by Michael Pippenger, vice president and associate provost for internationalization, as academic directors at the Rome and London Global Gateways, respectively. In their roles, Hyde Minor and DellaNeva will hold full academic oversight at the Gateways, including undergraduate programs and efforts to enhance the University’s research profile in Rome, London and beyond.
In Rome, Hyde Minor, professor of art history, begins her term in August, 2017. She succeeds Theodore J. Cachey Jr., Ravarino Family Professor of Italian and director of the William and Katherine Devers Program in Dante Studies.
During his three-year tenure as the inaugural academic director of the Rome Global Gateway, Cachey fostered important collaborations with universities, academies, and institutes of higher education such as the American Academy in Rome, the University of Rome Sapienza, the University of Roma Tre, and the Pontifical Gregorian University. He also created and implemented several outstanding, model programs to support international research and education, including the Rome Seminar and the Rome International Scholars Program. Cachey will return to campus in the fall to resume his position as the Ravarino Family Professor of Italian, director of the William and Katherine Devers Program in Dante Studies, and co-chair of the Italian Studies Program, and will continue to support NDI’s efforts in Rome and throughout Italy. His excellence in enhancing the reputation of Notre Dame in Rome, and throughout Italy, is recognized by all.
Additionally, Silvia Dall’Olio, assistant director at the Rome Global Gateway for three years, has been appointed executive director, a newly-created, permanent position. In this role, Dall’Olio will manage all day-to-day operations, personnel, budgets, and programs at the Gateway.
In London, DellaNeva, professor of Romance languages and literatures, also begins her term in August, 2017. She succeeds Roger Alford, associate dean and professor of law.
During his tenure as director, Alford was instrumental not only in restructuring the London Law Programme's administrative and programmatic functions to be more fully integrated with other aspects of the London Global Gateway, but also moved the Gateway forward in achieving its strategic goals of enriching students' international experience and expanding the global reach of faculty research and scholarship. Alford will be on leave from the University for one year to serve as Deputy Assistant Attorney General with the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division in Washington DC, but will subsequently resume his position as associate dean and professor of law. As a member of the University Committee on Internationalization and the London Global Gateway Faculty Committee, he will continue to support NDI’s efforts in London and further abroad. His commitment to creating opportunities at the Gateway for law and undergraduate students to come together was one of the many hallmarks of his tenure in London.
Three residence hall staff members have also been appointed in London and Rome to guide and support undergraduate students during their time abroad.
Justin Bartkus (BA, 2010 and MST, 2012), will serve as rector of the newly opened Villa on the Celio residence in Rome. Antonella Piccinin, a life-long resident of Rome, joins Bartkus as assistant rector. In addition to ensuring students’ welfare and safety, Bartkus and Piccinin will be responsible for creating and sustaining a living-learning community for residents through co-curricular and extra-curricular programming at the Villa.
Daliah Bond has been appointed rector of Conway Hall in London. She joins current assistant rectors Shannon McNaught and Kevin Barnes. Bond will provide pastoral and programmatic support for students living in Conway Hall to encourage them to integrate their classroom learning with their cultural and personal experience in London and the UK.
