Online series connects Notre Dame, Asia experts to examine vulnerabilities from coronavirus
A series of virtual panel discussions sponsored by the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and Notre Dame International (NDI) will examine worldwide vulnerabilities that have arisen or intensified from the coronavirus pandemic.
Global Fragility and Pandemic: Insight from Asia and Notre Dame will bring together Liu Institute experts and academics and practitioners from organizations in Asia, specifically Hong Kong, Beijing, and Mumbai.
Discussions will examine sustainable business, COVID-19’s effect on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and the enhanced challenges that the pandemic poses to people with disabilities. The events are being coordinated with NDI’s Hong Kong Global Center, Beijing Global Gateway, and Mumbai Global Center. Discussions will be held through Zoom webinars.
“So many of the Liu Institute faculty fellows have expertise that is directly relevant to issues from the pandemic,” said Michel Hockx, Liu Institute director. “To combine their knowledge with that of experts in Asia will provide a valuable platform for viewers to think about and, perhaps, act upon.”
“As Notre Dame International builds the University’s visibility and reputation in Asia, it is important to show Notre Dame’s unique approach to research and global challenges,” said Jonathan Noble, senior assistant provost for internationalization at Notre Dame. “This series will help in both regards as well as strengthen the existing Notre Dame community in Asia.”
The first event of the series is “Sustainable Business Development in the Age of Coronavirus” at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on July 14. Moderated by Hockx, the discussion will feature panelists Georges Enderle, professor emeritus of the Mendoza College of Business and Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame; Jessica McManus Warnell, associate teaching professor at the Mendoza College of Business; and William Yu, CEO of the Hong Kong-based World Green Organisation. This event is being coordinated with the Hong Kong Global Center.

The second event is "The UN Sustainable Development Goals During Coronavirus" at 8:30 a.m. EST on July 20. Moderated by Noble, it will feature Diane Desierto, associate professor of human rights law and global affairs, University of Notre Dame, and Yifeng Chen, associate professor and assistant dean for international law at Peking University. This event is being coordinated with the Beijing Global Gateway.
