The London Global Gateway Year (2014-15) in Review

The London Global Gateway 2014-15 Annual Review presents a roundup of conferences and events, as well as news and updates from academic programs in London.

“During the 2014–15 academic year, the London Global Gateway continued to pursue the University’s goals of enhancing student experience abroad and extending the global reach of faculty research.” – Warren von Eschenbach, Academic Director.

Highlights

116 events were hosted at the London Global Gateway this year with a great level of participation by Notre Dame faculty teaching in London, including the Great War Lecture Series by Tobias Boes (Department of German and Russian Languages and Literatures), and Preserving Iconic Theater Costumes: The How and The Why by Richard E. Donnelly (Department of Film Television and Theatre).

• Other notable Notre Dame related events included a symposium on nuclear physics by the Department of Physics, and conferences on behavioral ethics in business by Mendoza College of Business, and Catholic women religious in the local and global sphere by the Cushwa Centre for the Study of American Catholicism alongside several important U.K. religious institutions.

500+ students participated in a total of 9 academic programs at the London Global Gateway, more than 300 of who were undergraduates from Mendoza College of Business, First Year of Studies, and the colleges of Arts and Letters, Engineering, and Science.

5 new members of faculty joined the London Global Gateway throughout the year.  Notably, Colleen P. Graffy, Chairman of the Society of English and American Lawyers (SEAL) joined the London Law Centre to help increase internships for law students in London, but also organized a trip to the international legal institutions in The Hague, and is now teaching a course in international environment law.

7 visiting members of faculty from Notre Dame taught for a semester at the London Global Gateway, from the College of Arts and Letters, College of Engineering, Mendoza College of Business, and The Law School.

6 new undergraduate courses were introduced this year in the fields of philosophy, theatre, politics, and theology, taught by both new and long-standing faculty members.

• Undergraduate Internship Placements have also increased significantly.  The most notable additions to the program were Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, the fourth division of BBDO to offer internships to Notre Dame students, St. Thomas More Language School, and the non-governmental organization C3: Collaborating for Health.
