Important Steps to Take Before Traveling Abroad
Graduate and professional students undertaking Notre Dame-sponsored international travel are strongly encouraged to take the following steps before going abroad:
Register international travel in the university’s Travel Registry two weeks prior to departure so that NDI has information about your trip and can contact you in the event of an emergency.
- Be sure to check with your program, as some Graduate and Professional programs may require you to register international travel.
- The University may not be fully able to assist or arrange evacuation for those who do not register travel through the NDI Travel Registry.
Confirm international travel health insurance coverage for your destination and activities while in country. For more information, please visit the International Health Insurance page.

SMART TRAVELER ENROLLMENT PROGRAM
Enroll in STEP (U.S Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). STEP is a free service to allow U.S. citizens/nationals traveling abroad to enroll with the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate; a Smart Traveler app is also available. Non-U.S. passport holders should leave the passport field blank when registering, and contact their home country’s government to learn about available additional support.
HEALTH AND SAFETY ORIENTATION
Check with your program or funding source for pre-departure health and safety orientation requirements. NDI will also provide location-specific orientations to individuals and groups upon request.
Check the NDI Events page for the dates of the next International Safety Summit.
