2018 T Shirt Design Winner

International Student and Scholar Affairs, a division of Notre Dame International, unveiled the 2018 T-shirt design contest winner.

Xinyue Zhao, a second year PhD student in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, won the contest with her creative design.

“I wanted to combine the two themes of international and Notre Dame,” said Zhao. “I got this idea to arrange all of the international country names inside the ‘ND’.”

Zhao is one of twenty-two students who submitted designs to Notre Dame International for the annual contest. Each year, ISSA invites students to submit designs for a T-shirt, which will be printed and distributed at the International Student Orientation in August.

“It’s a great way to get our international students engaged and involved with campus events,” said Cynthia Reeves, international student and scholar advisor. “This year’s submissions were all very unique and represented the international community well.”

The contest opened up on Monday, March 12 and closed Friday, April 13. ISSA staff and other colleagues chose the top three designs. Students were then asked to vote for the overall winner.

This year, 765 votes were cast. Zhao’s design received more than 400 of those votes.

“It was fun to participate in such a competition and it will be a joy to see people wearing my own designed shirts,” said Zhao. “It makes me feel very connected to our Notre Dame family.”

Each year, ISSA welcomes nearly 500 new international students on campus. Throughout the year, ISSA assists more than 1,400 international students and 300 scholars in maintaining their status as F and J visa holders. The orientation, scheduled for Wednesday, August 15, is the first step in welcoming international students and providing them with access to resources that will help ensure a successful start at the University.
