Provost Burish with President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan
Thomas G. Burish, provost of the University of Notre Dame, met at the Presidential Office in Taipei with Ma Ying-jeou, president of Taiwan, on October 22, 2015, just more than two weeks before the historic meeting between Ma and Xi Jinping, president of China. Provost Burish and President Ma discussed Chinese history, relations, and education, and Ma praised the heroic military service of Liu Fang-wu, father of Robert Liu, benefactor of Notre Dame’s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.
Provost Burish also introduced the Liu Institute’s Asia Leadership Forum, which was inaugurated in June 2015 with Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former president of the Republic of Indonesia. Ma praised the forum as “a first-class academic platform for the international community to advance understanding about Asia.”
Notre Dame participants at the meeting included Trustee Emeritus Douglas Hsu, Provost Thomas G. Burish, Robert Liu, Assistant Provost Jonathan Noble, Tracy Huang from the Beijing Global Gateway, and Michael Loungo. The meeting took place directly before Global Forum: Asia, held in Hong Kong October 23-25.
