Vittorio Montemaggi and students in his ‘Literature and Inter-Religious Understanding I’ class concluded a series of international trips with a visit to Kraków and Auschwitz. Funded by a Nanovic Institute Learning Beyond the Classroom Grant, the class had visited Rome in September and Venice earlier in November.
Accompanied by Alice Tyrell and Florencia Cano, the group arrived in Kraków on November 18. They spent the evening exploring the historic Jewish quarter and the site of the Ghetto established by the Nazis in 1941-1943.
Historian Mirosłav Obstarczyk guided the students on a visit to the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau sites the following day. Afterwards students spent time at Auschwitz II-Birkenau in silent reflection, thinking about their classwork on Primo Levi’s If This Is A Man.
