Why did you opt to serve as a Senior Fellow for Internationalization?

Growing up in a multicultural environment, I was fortunate to experience the richness of diverse perspectives and traditions. Seeing first-hand how sharing ideas and learning makes each other better instilled in me a profound appreciation for the strength that comes from cross-border collaborations. As a Senior Fellow, I am fueled by the desire to give back and amplify the transformative potential of global interconnectedness, helping other students pursue opportunities and gain new experiences.

Talk about your international experiences and why they are important. How have they served you (academically, personally, professionally, etc).

My international experiences have been incredibly valuable in shaping who I am today, impacting me on various levels – academically, personally, and professionally. I grew up in multiple cities like Beijing, Singapore, and Chengdu, attending international school, before eventually going to high school and university in in the United States. Studying and working in diverse cultural settings have broadened my perspective, allowing me to see the world through different lenses. Academically, I have had the privilege of learning from professors and peers with unique viewpoints, which has enriched my understanding of subjects and encouraged critical thinking. Ultimately, these international experiences have nurtured my growth as a well-rounded individual, equipping me to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world. They've also inspired me to actively promote internationalization, as I have seen firsthand the positive impact it can have on individuals, communities, and society at large.

Why do you think it's important to focus on internationalization at the University of Notre Dame?

In today's globalized world, preparing students to be effective global citizens is paramount. By exposing them to diverse cultures, ideas, and perspectives, the university equips them to thrive in an interconnected society and engage with the complex challenges that transcend borders. Moreover, an emphasis on internationalization cultivates an inclusive and welcoming campus environment. It celebrates diversity and fosters an atmosphere of respect, understanding, and empathy among students, faculty, and staff. Lastly, by prioritizing internationalization, the University of Notre Dame plays a vital role in addressing global challenges. Collaborative research, joint initiatives, and international partnerships enable the university to contribute meaningfully to finding solutions to pressing issues such as climate change, public health crises, and social inequalities. Ultimately, internationalization enriches education, enhances opportunities, and strengthens the university's impact on the world.
