TAU–Notre Dame Joint Research Projects

Through this jointly funded program both the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame) and Tel Aviv University (TAU) are inviting proposals for joint research projects with the potential to achieve international recognition and to generate continued external research funds for both partners. Project selection for the TAU-Notre Dame Joint Research Projects Program will be competitive and made jointly by Notre Dame and TAU.

There may be the ability to leverage off the capacity of the University of Notre Dame in Jerusalem (Tantur campus and the Notre Dame Jerusalem team) thus establishing a stronger link between the universities on the ground.

Grant Awardees

Funding

  • Awards up to $30,000 will be made for a joint research project.
    • TAU will provide each approved project up to $15,000 and Notre Dame will provide each approved project up to $15,000, each in support of their respective researchers.
  • The funding period will be from August 2024 – July 2025.

Eligibility/Grant Requirements

  • Full-time regular members of Notre Dame faculty and special professional faculty are eligible to apply.
  • TAU faculty are eligible to apply.

The involvement of graduate students, while not required, would contribute to their training and experience with an international collaboration.

Proposal Guidelines

  • Notre Dame and TAU applicants should jointly submit their proposals via NDG's submissions manager
  • Each proposal must include two principal investigators, one from Notre Dame and one from TAU.
    • The proposal may also include other co-investigators from both institutions.
    • Co-investigators from other institutions may also be included but funding can only be provided for Notre Dame and TAU investigators.

Submitted proposals must be written in clear, non-technical language and include the following items:

  • Research Proposal title
  • Notre Dame Co-Principal Investigator email (faculty from Notre Dame)
  • TAU Co-Principal Investigator email (faculty from TAU)
  • Abstract of the proposed project (225 word limit)
  • Description of the proposed project to include:
    • The goals, purpose, significance and activities (1000 word limit)
    • Where the project will take place (150 word limit)
    • Expertise of the faculty participants (750 word limit)
  • Funding requested from Notre Dame and TAU
  • Budget and budget justification: supply detailed budget identifying and explaining all anticipated expenditures
    • Fully justify any proposed travel
    • Description of other funds secured or applied for
  • Curriculum vitae for each faculty member
  • Plans for future funding

Criteria for evaluating proposals

A faculty-led review committee will use the following criteria to evaluate proposals:

  • Quality of the proposal
  • Collaborator complementarity
  • Potential outcomes and impact
  • Potential for future collaboration and funding

Timeline

Awards will be announced in June 2024 with funds available in August 2024.

Follow-up Report and Activities

Successful applicants are required to submit a report on the outcome of their grant (due a month after the workshop ends) and reference the Schlindwein Family Grant Program, as applicable, in any relevant publications.

The report should include:
  • A summary of the activities funded by the award and significant results achieved, including evidence that the project contributed to the collaboration between Notre Dame and Tel Aviv University
  • Any publications or manuscripts resulting from the award
  • Photos, if applicable, are welcome
Activities include:
  • Successful applicants are required to make a brief oral presentation, at an event hosted by NDG, on the outcome of the research and collaboration with Tel Aviv University following the end of the grant period.
  • Submit brief updates (and pictures, if applicable) of any development related to the grant funding that is newsworthy (e.g. conference, launch of new program), including any relevant feedback from collaborators in Tel Aviv
